What Can Small Businesses Learn From 2021?
The world shifted on its axis when Covid-19 hit in 2020. Nobody thought the pandemic would last very long, but it – and its effects – marched on throughout 2021 and continues today. Last year, there were many lessons learned, both personally and professionally. In some ways, 2021 was one long learning experience. Isn’t that what “new normal” is all about?
There were a number of already-existing HR priorities that became more vital than ever last year and will shape and guide this year.
Three Lessons to Consider in 2022 and Beyond!
Values
People will come to work for – and stay with – you only if their personal values align with those of your company. And it’s about much more than just profit. This has long been the case, but as they shifted their lives and lifestyles into the pandemic mode, candidates and employees also made mindset and value shifts. Safety, balance, family life, and doing good for others took top billing. Money? Sure, it’s nice and it’s important, but it’s not always people’s driving force.
Safety
Create and maintain a work environment where people feel safe physically, psychologically, and emotionally. Corners cannot be cut nor compromises accepted. People have never before experienced the feeling of possibly getting sick or dying from simply working or being together. And the cloud of mental and emotional fallout from coronavirus isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
Flexibility
Don’t just think outside the proverbial box when it comes to thinking about when and where work gets done – implode it entirely. As much as possible, remove restrictions and let employees make these choices. Your payback will be increased job satisfaction, engagement, and productivity. And the good word will quickly spread.
Growth
Continue to offer and develop additional opportunities for your employees to learn and grow within your company. Ultimately, this will mean you have the best possible workforce on hand. It also shows your willingness to invest in your people, something they will reciprocate with increased loyalty and better performance.
Support
Fully supporting your employees goes beyond helping them grow in their careers. As you tailor benefits to each individual’s unique situation, consider what type of assistance they need to keep their lives in healthy balance. For some, this is educational assistance or financial counseling. For others, it helps with caregiving for young children elderly loved ones, or mental health services. Find out what people need – and then find a way to help meet those needs. Remember, they’re your lifeblood. So help them keep their lives in sync.
